Meet our Mods

Mod Mari

Co-Head Mod

I love working on zines, I think it's the best to work with a group of passionate people and make something together! This is why I wanted to create this zine with Keats, the zines we were modding together were ending and I wanted to work on another dark fantasy one. This is my first time formatting a zine but I'm so excited about the concept and working on this project overall; I'll do my best to make a good end product!

Mod Betney

Art Mod

I’m Betney! A recent games design graduate with a passion for character design. Dark fantasy was a big inspiration for me as an artist growing up, so the opportunity to see how it’s influenced other artists and their designs is very exciting for me!

Mod Izu

Art Mod

I'm a simple person: I love characters with objects for heads and I love books. Hailing from Canada, I spend most of my time huddled in bed from the cold and daydreaming about the next book I'll put myself through. When I'm not piling more personal projects onto my plate, I work in the animation industry making children's shows.

I chose to mod for this project because the tasks seem very much in my wheel house to handle and I like to help projects succeed!

I am a sucker for everything fantasy and OCs, and excited to get more dark fantasy in my life through this project! I will be working on the graphics, and cannot wait to see all of your original characters and stories!

Frequently Asked

What is a zine, anyway?
A "zine" is an anthology-type magazine made by a group of people who do not go through publishers or widespread marketing. Typically they are created in small, limited-run batches and are not official merchandise!

What are the main themes of this project?
Our central theme is dark fantasy original work, and subthemes include weapons ("blades") and flowers ("bluebells"). We are interested in showcasing original characters both on the battlefield and off it, in softer settings. We will work with our creators to best determine what these themes mean to them, and are open to various interpretations!

Will this project feature NSFW (not safe for work) content, such as explicit sexual content?
This project will be SFW (safe-for-work), meaning we will not accept explicit sexual content for the main zine. Due to our theme, pieces made for our project could contain mild gore/blood. SPECIAL NOTICE: we will accept NSFW pieces from 18+ digital merch volunteers, to be handled in NSFW server channels/forms only.

Will this zine be for-profit, for charity, or free PDF release?
We will be a free PDF release, all-digital project!

How old will I need to be to participate in this project, and will I be required to provide proof of age?
Due to the relative maturity of our theme, we ask that all applicants certify that they are 16 years of age or above. While we will not require proof of age and will operate on an honor system, any contributors found to be below the required age will be dismissed from the project.

Will you be holding mod applications?
We will not be holding mod applications, as we have scouted a full team to proceed!

Which kinds of contributor(s) will you be accepting into the zine? How many of each are you looking for?
We are looking for page artists as well as prose writers and poets to participate in this project! While we have not settled on exact numbers yet, we would love to have at least 20 participating artists and 10 creators contributing written work.

How many samples will prospective contributors need to have ready by the application period, and will we need portfolios?
For both artists and writers, we will ask for two complete samples on the application (a third being optional), and we will also require a portfolio of your best works!

How many pages will artists have in the zine/what should be the length for written works?
We intend to allocate two pages for each artist - these can be used for two separate page works, a spread, or even a brief, two-page comic! For prose writers, we are looking for works up to 6k in length by word count. Mod Mari, who will oversee our poet contributors, will work with each poet to determine an appropriate page length according to each creator's vision!

How long will the creation period be (how long will I have to work on my pieces)?
Our creation period will last for approximately four months from the time contributors join our server, with four check-ins along the way!

Do we need previous original work in dark fantasy to apply? What about traditional artworks?
You do not need previous original work or work in dark fantasy to apply, though it may help mods visualize what type of piece you could bring to the zine! Traditional artworks will be accepted, and should be scanned to an appropriate, high-quality resolution of at least 300 dpi upon submission.

Will you have digital merch to go along with the zine?
We will be featuring digital merch for this project, on a volunteer-only basis! This means we won't be recruiting contributors specifically to create merch, but will hold sign-ups where each contributor (yes, including writers!) can volunteer to create a piece of merch!

Will creators keep ownership of their work, and what considerations will be put into place to protect the artist's works specifically from theft/reposting?
Creators will of course keep ownership of their works, and will only need to commit to refrain from posting their pieces until after our free, digital PDF is released! To protect artist's works in the PDF, we will ask each artist to signature their work, and will publish in a dpi resolution unsuitable for print.

I have another question. Where should I direct my inquiry?
Find our CuriousCat linked at the bottom of any page! : )
